Half-ton, three-quarter-ton, one-ton: what the numbers mean

1. 1500 / 150 (half-ton). Silverado 1500 and F-150 class. Best ride quality, best fuel economy, plenty of truck for a bumper-pull utility trailer, a bed of mulch or a camper under its rated weight.
2. 2500 / 250 (three-quarter-ton). F-250 Super Duty, Ram 2500, Silverado 2500HD. The middle ground most Kentucky contractors and farm operations land on — real payload and real towing without a dually's footprint.

Gas or diesel

Bumper-pull utility and car hauler loads usually work behind a half-ton or three-quarter-ton; gooseneck and fifth-wheel loads, loaded dump trailers and equipment generally call for a one-ton.
